This episode's theme is the art of sublimation. To sublimate is “to divert the expression of an instinctual desire or impulse from its unacceptable form to one that is considered more socially or culturally acceptable.” For example, somebody gets mad and wants to yell — but instead, goes to the gym and works it out. Or a person longs for something or someone they can’t have, so instead of stealing, they channel the pain of unfulfilled desire into a song. An artist is essentially doing this every time they take difficult emotions and use it to fuel their art. Today’s artists dove deep into their hearts and difficult emotions to process them and transform them into something beautiful and impactful in the world.
